Captain's Log
Today a player stood on a moving hull in Unreal for the first time. Not a test cube, not a scripted dummy. A real character, driven by real keys, riding a ship that was rolling along at about 28 kilometres an hour.
The first run looked fine until I read the numbers. The server had rejected 4,163 of my moves in about five thousand frames. It was checking where I stood against where the ship would be on one frame, while the engine had placed me against where the ship was on another. Two clocks, one frame apart, and every step looked like cheating. Once both sides read the same frame, the rejections went to zero.
Then I did the thing I have been waiting months to do. I walked off the edge, dropped off the ship, walked back on, and it picked me up again. It is a grey box level and it is ugly. It is also the first proof that this game can exist.
