Captain's Log

Newer Is Not the Same as Safer

I spent most of today reading changelogs and forum threads instead of writing code. There's an engine update sitting in front of me, and the automatic assumption is that you should always be on the latest version — patches, fixes, stability. But "latest" and "safer" are not the same word, and I've been burned before by treating them like they are.

What I was actually trying to figure out: does this update fix anything that matters to where COGHEIM is right now, or does it introduce new unknowns I'd be debugging for a week? The answer wasn't obvious. Some of the threading changes look genuinely useful. Some of the deprecations touch systems I'd have to rewrite before I could even test whether anything broke.

I didn't update. Not today. That might sound like standing still, but it felt more like not tripping over something I couldn't see yet. I made a note of the specific build number I'm watching and why. Sometimes the log is just: I looked carefully, I waited, and that was the right call.
